OUR STORY THAT LEAD TO SUSTAINABILITY

Finding Inspiration in Every Turn

sustainable1.PNG

Every Journey has a story.

Back in 2018, we took over The George from Richard & Ann Symonds. We knew the village very well after running Ye Olde Nags Head successfully for the owners for many years.

With help starting off, along the way it became apparent that a lot could be done at The George. Especially with the outside space available to the front and the rear.

Then, dreaded Covid hit and some of those plans had to be put on hold for a while. After reopening, the main thoughts were on rebuilding the reputation we had gained before, with hopes that the plans we have now implemented could be made possible.

In 2022 the possibility of owning a home in Castleton was made a reality as well as securing land at the side, on the entrance to the village.

Raised Beds, Polytunnel, Roof Top Garden, Greenhouses all went in to full swing, with a little help along the way.

We soon had a Variety of produce growing to make the Chutneys, Jams, Flavoured Gins, Vodkas & Rums that we currently sell. (Now also available to purchase online, see our 'Homemade Produce' tab)

Locals soon became aware of what was happening and were happy to offer their gluts of produce in exchange for our Goods or Beer!

Our Veg Supplier G.W Price of Eckington then also became aware and offered their unsaleable items to us to use and reduce wastage again.

After fitting solar Panels, we purchased a Kiln so now we can slump used Wine / Spirit bottles into unique serving dishes for the food, again cutting down on waste. (Also now available to purchase online, see our 'Glassware' tab)

It has been a very fast disappearing year or 2 with plenty on the go to keep us busy. And now we have managed to get the 'No Dig Allotment' up and running in the field over the wall from our Kitchen Garden!!

Come along and have a look at the Kitchen Garden and Allotment next time you're in the Village, Everyone is Welcome!

Thanks John, Vicky, Jess & The Team

Making our own Jams, Chutneys & Gin/Vodka/Rum Liqueurs

Using any extra produce we have, we make a variety of different flavoured accompaniments to serve alongside our Specials Menu. We then jar up any left over to sell to our customers with the proceeds going back into the upkeep of the Gardens.

Some of the things we are looking into next:

  • Rain Water Flushing for our toilets

  • Cutting down on one use plastics for Shampoos & Soaps

Dehydrating Herbs & Vegetables

Any excess will be dehydrated to be used at a later date as dry goods!

Keeping Toilet/Kitchen Roll inner cardboard tubes

Re-using anything we possibly can and using these to start off the seeds allowing them to germinate!

No-one can do everything, but everyone can do something!
